In Gaya, India there used to exist a hillock separating the nearby blocks of Atri and Wazirganj, with Wazirganj containing the only hospital. After Dashrath Manjhi’s wife Falguni Devi had an accident in Atri and died due to not receiving immediate medical care while traveling to Wazirganj, he resolved to carve a path through the hillock. Through 22 years of effort he carved a path 110m long (360ft), 9.1m (30ft) wide and 7.6m (25ft) deep using only a hammer and chisel! This shortened the travel between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Gaya town from 55km to 15km, making access to medical care much quicker.
